The guest of honour and main speaker of the gathering was Israel Meir Lau, Israel's former Chief Rabbi, who delivered an emotional speech, in which, amongst other things, he also mentioned his personal experiences of deportation during WW II.
It was not the first time Ambassador Dorey visited the Dohany Street Synagogue, Europe's largest active Jewish temple, where the memorial took place. The British Embassy has close ties with the Hungarian Jewish community.
In March 2010, Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall alsopaid a visit to the Dohany Street Synagogue and met Hungarian Jewish leaders, while in October the British Embassy organised theunveiling ceremony of the Raoul Wallenberg plaque on the Embassy’s building, in which the late Swedish diplomat in WWII operated for months.
