THERE were five reported antisemitic incidents in Glasgow in the first six months of 2010, according to figures produced by the Community Security Trust.
Overall incidents for the UK were 310, compared with 628 in 2009 when the Gaza conflict took place, but are up on the figures for the same period in previous years.
Commenting in a joint newsletter from the CST and Strathclyde Police, Glasgow Jewish Representative Council president Edward Isaacs said: "There have been incidents of antisemitic activity and some of these have been very uncomfortable for the individuals concerned.
"While not wishing to diminish or tolerate these incidents, they have not been of an extreme nature. Any antisemitic incidents which are reported either to the Glasgow Jewish Representative Council or directly to CST or Strathclyde Police are treated seriously.
"The local CST volunteers do a tremendous job in providing the Rep Council with advice and attending local functions and events."
Strathclyde Police East Renfrewshire Area Commander Kenny Graham said: "One of my main priorities has been - and will remain to be - to provide reassurance to the Jewish community in the light of the much publicised situation in Gaza and the subsequent reaction in the UK.
"Despite the increased tensions it is very encouraging to note that there have been very few antisemitic incidents in East Renfrewshire, with a total of eight having been reported to police over a 12 month period.
"I can assure you that I treat each and every incident very seriously indeed and ensure that due and diligent enquiry is carried out to identify and detain those responsible.
"It is absolutely imperative that anyone who perceives that he or she has been subjected to any antisemitic behaviour feels confident enough to report it to the police on 0141 532 5770."
