Alarming increase in incidents of honour killings in Pakistan

British BlogsLahore, Jan 5 : Incidents involving killing of women in the name of honour has increased to alarming proportions inPakistan, with 36 women being killed for honour in the past year, women's rights organization Aurat Foundation has said.

Speaking at a press conference, Ashfaq Mengal, Aurat Foundation's programme coordinator, said that more incidents of violence against women were being reported to the organization.

"About 76 cases of violence against women were registered during the last year. Although there was a decline in such cases, but incidents involving murder of women for honour increased to alarming proportions," the Daily Times quoted Mengal, as saying. 

Giving further details, Mengal said that cases about abduction of two women, suicides by eight, rapes of six, burning alive of one, acid attacks on five and torturing to death of four women were reported in 2010. 

He also emphasized that his organization would share its report with the government to eliminate violence against women.
