Washington - New revelations contained in the series of internal Palestinian documents published by al-Jazeera Tuesday show the Palestinian Authority cooperated closely with Israel in the fight against extremists.
One document detailed a 2005 conversation between then-Israeli defence minister Shaul Mofaz and the now former Palestinian interior minister, Nasser Youssef, in which the former urges the latter to have a leading militant killed.
'Why don't you kill him?' Mofaz apparently said. Youssef replied, 'Our capabilities are limited, and you haven't offered anything.'
One month later, Hassan al-Madhoun, who lived in the Gaza Strip and was a leading member of the Al Aqsa Martyr's Brigade, was killed by an Israeli attack helicopter. It was unclear from the documents whether the Palestinian Authority played a role in the killing.
Another document delves into a conversation the Palestinian Authority's chief negotiator, Saeb Erekat, had with David Hale, a US envoy, in 2009.
'We have had to kill Palestinians to establish one authority, one gun and the rule of law. We continue to perform our obligations. We have invested time and effort and killed our own people to maintain order and the rule of law,' Erekat said, according to al-Jazeera.
Al-Jazeera began publishing the documents it obtained Sunday night. The leaked documents have prompted anger at the Palestinian Authority under President Mahmoud Abbas. Hamas has accused his government of collaborating with the Israelis
