Bravery on the streets of Cairo: dramatic video from #jan25 protests raises distant echo of Tiananmen Square

Clip-large
Tens of thousands of citizens in Egypt have pledged their support for #jan25protests in Cairo and elsewhere. Like the Tunisian protests that brought the fall of President Ben Ali, the Egyptian protests are based on frustration with the government for alleged human rights abuses, corruption, and for economic difficulties. January 25 is Police Day – normally a holiday – but police are out in force in major cities. Security has been tight since early morning, with barriers erected in main streets in several towns. The government has warned protesters that they face arrest, and has called for its supporters to mount counter-demonstrations.
