One of the highest points of friction between Israel and the Palestinians has always been the entry checkpoints Palestinian workers must pass to get to jobs inside Israel proper.
Tensions are often high between the Palestinians, who see the checkpoints as demeaning, and the Israeli soldiers manning them, who are wary of everyone passing through after years of Palestinian terrorist attacks.
Palestinians often claim that harsh Israeli behavior at the checkpoints is deliberate and even enjoyable to those perpetrating it. But a new development by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) once again proves that Israel has no intention or desire to make life hard for the Palestinian Arabs.
In the very near future, most of these main entry checkpoints will see live soldiers replaced by ID terminals. The terminals will do a quick hand scan of each Palestinian wanting to enter Israel proper and check if they have the proper authorization to do so.
More than 25,000 Palestinian Arabs enter Israel every day for work. Most will now be able to do so without personal interaction with an Israeli soldier.
