What future for Egypt’s Jewish heritage?

Roger Bilboul at Cairo's Adly St synagogue

Wednesday 29 January 2014. 8pm Presentation by Roger Bilboul.

In April 2013, the tiny Jewish community of Egypt lost its leader, Carmen Weinstein. Her successor Magda Haroun will certainly be its last.

During her lifetime, Carmen Weinstein tried hard to salvage Cairo’s decaying synagogues, and succeeded in persuading the authorities to restore the Maimonides synagogue. Could – and should – Magda Haroun continue Carmen’s work? In the post-Arab spring turmoil, when Egypt is facing much greater challenges, is anybody listening?

Born in Alexandria, Roger Bilboul is active in the Nebi Daniel Association, which aims to restore and preserve Egypt’s Jewish heritage. He attended Carmen Weinstein’s funeral and is a regular visitor to Egypt. His illustrated talk will assess what has been achieved so far, and what the future holds.
