British Blogs

Last night members of St Mark's Coptic Church of Scotland in Kirkcaldy arrived at their traditional Christmas Mass to discover a police guard outside the door.

Fife police offered to protect the congregation after the church was one of three churches threatened on an Islamist website.

The church, which celebrates Christmas on 7 January was targeted following unrest between Moslems and Christians in Egypt.

Parishoner Subhi Hashwa said the atmosphere in the church was "calm but subdued" and that six policeman stood outside as around 300 coptic Christians of all ages, from all over Scotland celebrated their traditional mass. Father Mark Aziz said: "We thank the police for being with us - it made people feel more calm."
