STEEP HIKE IN NUMBER OF ISRAELI EXPATS APPLYING TO RENOUNCE CITIZENSHIP

Whereas poll shows Israelis of all stripes take great pride in citizenship

The number of expat Israelis wishing to renounce their citizenship has grown by more than half in 2014 compared to the previous year, data gathered by Israeli ministries and embassies shows.

In the past year, 765 Israeli nationals living abroad applied to renounce their Israeli citizenship, whereas the year before 478 made the request. Of the 765, 635 were approved.

The majority of applications were submitted by Israeli nationals living in Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, the UK and the US. The most frequently cited reason for wanting to renounce the citizenship was a desire to adopt the citizenship of another state that permits no double citizenship.

In order for the renouncement application to be ratified, the applicants must prove they have another citizenship, or residency rights in a different state.

Whereas a poll conducted by the Israel Democracy Institute think tank, canvassing just over 1,000 respondents, has shown Israelis of all stripes take pride in their citizenship.

According to the poll's findings, 86% of Israeli Jews and 65% of Israeli Arabs attested that they either very or quite proud to be Israeli, whereas 13% of Israeli Jews and 34% of Arabs said they were not proud to be Israeli.

The Israeli institution Israeli Jews deem the most trustworthy is the Israeli Defense Forces, with 88 percent of respondents saying it has their full trust.

Israel's President Reuven Rivlin came second with a trust percentage of 71; Supreme Court – the Israeli institution most Arab citizens, 60 percent, find trustworthy – was third with 62 percent.

The military is trusted by 51 percent of Israel's Arabs, though very few of them do full military service.
