An administration amendment authorising the flag to be hoisted was today voted through during a meeting of the full city council.

It came after city leaders knocked back previous calls to fly the flag, opting instead to raise the banner of the Disasters Emergency Committee Appeal.

The two flags will now fly side by side on a date still to be determined.

Leaders of the Scottish Palestinian Solidarity Campaign, which presented a deputation during the meeting, have welcomed the move.

Member Albie O’Neill said: “The flying of the Palestinian flag above the city chambers in Scotland’s capital sends a message to the world that Edinburgh stands with the people of Palestine.

“Alongside its support for the humanitarian appeal for Gaza, Edinburgh council is continuing its proud tradition of supporting the oppressed peoples of the world.”
