Edinburgh Council flying the Palestinian flag

Edinburgh City Council leader, Councillor Andrew Burns, has done more back-flips than an Olympic gymnast. At first he was adamant that the PLO flag would not be flown on the council building. Then he relented and agreed to fly the flag, for one day, alongside the DEC Appeal flag. Now it will be flying on its own – because the DEC Appeal, apparently, does not want their cause tainted and have instructed the council to remove the DEC flag on that day!

I have been informed that in accordance of the decision taken by a majority at the Council meeting on 21st August, the flag is to be flown on Monday 1st September for one day only.

However, the flag supporting the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) appeal, which is already being flown, will be taken down on that date so that it does not fly alongside the Palestinian flag.    I have been told that this is being done at the insistence of DEC – who do not want the flags to be flying side by side.  (The Council decision was to fly them both together for one day so the Council Leader, Cllr Andrew Burns, has now deferred to DEC sensitivities).
