There have been fresh signs of social tension in Algeria where a man tried to set himself on fire in the capital in a protest over unemployment.
Although prevented from igniting the fuel he had doused over himself, his attempted suicide was the latest in a series of such acts in the Arab world.
Tunisia’s revolution was triggered by a man who set fire to himself over his treatment by authorities.
The latest sign of desperation came during a protest outside Algeria’s Employment Ministry.
Demonstrators were demanding “a decent job for every Algerian” and unemployment benefit equal to half the minimum wage, according to Samir Laaribi
of the National Committee for the Rights of the Unemployed.
At least two other similar suicide attempts were made elsewhere in Algeria on Sunday, according to some reports. Opposition groups trying to force the government to quit plan a major protest rally on Saturday.
