The international community welcomed the resignation of Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak. Catherine Ashton, the EU Foreign Affairs chief said Friday she respected the decision by Mubarak to step down, and called for dialogue in order to form a broad-based government. Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Swiss Government said Switzerland decided to freeze assets of Mubarak.
Turkey has said it hopes that the new Egyptian government would respond to the aspirations of the people. In the Arab world, thousands of people celebrated in the streets the news from Egypt. In the Gaza Strip, locals held in spontaneous demonstrations, and the sound of heavy shooting in the air was heard. The Qatari government said it considered the transfer of power in Egypt to the military as a "significant and positive step" towards achieving the aspirations of the Egyptian people for democracy, reform and a decent life. Iran considered that the event in Egypt is a "great victory." However, in the Algerian capital, police dispersed a rally to celebrate Mubarak's departure
